5 Things Every Asthmatic Should Have in Their Bag

September 26, 2017

Life is full of surprises. You're on your workspace comfortably and quietly going about your day then your colleague who loves to wear strong scents passes by. The next thing you know you're having an asthma attack.

You can't stop all your colleagues from wearing perfume because they have the right to do so. The one thing you can do is inform the people near you that you have asthma and ask them if they can lessen the amount or wear a lighter scent. I did this before and it worked. (Or maybe, I was just lucky to have such understanding colleagues.)

Besides informing your friends or colleagues, you must always be prepared. Here are 5 things I think every asthmatic should have in their bag.

Your prescription and medication

Yes, that's number 1 and 2. You should never leave home without both.

Sure, you bring your tablets/ capsules with you to work or school. But you're going to take them eventually. If in case you did not realize that you're down to one or worst zero, how will you buy? Are you able to remember all the names and dosage? I never will. Plus, there are medicines that require prescriptions.

The mighty inhaler

Aside from the prescribed medicines, inhaler is also essential. Make sure to bring it along. And since inhalers now have counters or a meter dose, it's your responsibility to check how many are left. Lastly, clean it well.

A medical mask

This is not a fashion statement or a tool to evade the paparazzi. Wearing a medical mask is in fact a good way to avoid various illnesses when traveling like asthma attacks for commuters.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 235 million people suffering from asthma. Though developing asthma can be caused by genetic predisposition, it can also be caused by environmental exposure to certain substances and particles that irritate the airways such as indoor allergens, outdoor allergens, tobacco smoke, chemical irritants in the workplace and air pollution. So don't be shy to use one.

Leave a note

In my bag, I always keep a piece of paper with my full name as well as a medical information and the person to call in case of emergency. Make sure that the piece of paper is the first thing they see when they open your bag. Or, you can put this in your pocket. And if you have a planner, make sure you filled out the information as well.

Do you also have these in your bag? If yours is different or if there is something you would like to add, please comment down below. :)
